Both the present perfect simple and the present perfect continuous talk about something that started in the past.

The present perfect simple is a completed action which has a result in the present:

 

* She's passed her driving test, so now she can take the children to the day care centre herself.

The present perfect continuous is an action which is still happening now:

* They've been working hard on their presentation, but it isn't finished yet.

The two tenses are often very similar in their usage. However:

present perfect simple:

emphasises the result

They've worked on the environmental project all week and they're going to present the final version tomorrow. 

present perfect continuous

emphasises the action

They've been working on the environmental project all week, but they still got some way to go.

1. I've broken my personal record playing virtual tennis
2. I've been playing virtual tennis all evening

1. 1 = result of an activity 2 = length of an activity
2. 1 = length of an activity 2 = result of an activity

present perfect simple

focuses on how many times an action has been repeated

We've watched that programme about celebrities several times.

present perfect continuous

focuses on the proces of change over a period of time and that the changes are not finished

I've been listening to the audio novels you recommended and I've still got two left

1. I've been learning how to bake bread.

2. I've phoned her more than six times, but she never answers the phone.

1. 1 = how many times something has been repeated 2 = changes or developments which are not finished
2. 1 = changes or developments which are not finished 2 = how many times something has been repeated

present perfect simple

may give the idea that something is permanent 

(and may be accompanied by a time expression which shows this:)

She's been a lecturer for well over  twenty years and she is still actively involved in research.

present perfect continuous

may give the idea that something is temporary

(and may be accompanied by a time expression which shows this:)

She's been working here part-time this week, but she goes back to her normal job on Monday

1. I've been helping my mum while her assistent is on holiday.
2. We've lived in this house since I was a small child.

1. 1 = temporary 2 = permanent
2. 1 = permanent 2 = temporary
