Speaking activity Past Simple/Past Continuous

You are a detective and your English teacher was murdered last night. You are going to interview your classmate - a murder suspect-  about his/her alibi:

Role A = ask questions 

(What were you doing last night at 1 a.m.? ; Who was with you? When did you notice the door was ajar? etc.)

Role B = answer questions in full (repeat part of the question: Last night I was doing my homework etc.)

Verbal irony - meaning the opposite of what is being said

Dramatic irony - the audience/reader already know(s) what is going to happen, the character in the play/book doesn't know 

Situational irony - what happens in a situation is the opposite of what you would expect to happen 

(other forms of humour often used: puns, sarcasm)

Pun

Play on words that sound the same, 

but have a different meaning

Example:

Shakespeare asked me if he could lend a pencil. 

I replied: "2B or not 2B?"

Sarcasm

Verbal irony used to mock (make fun of) someone/something, show someone's/something's shortcomings

Example:

"I see you’re still learning how to use the internet."
