Next topic: Talking
about the past

Slide 26 - Tekstslide

Apple launched the first portable computer in the 1990s
Google started in 2000

Slide 27 - Tekstslide

Slide 28 - Tekstslide

Slide 29 - Tekstslide

And let's
not forget
the irregular
verbs
(onregelmatige
werkwoorden)

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

But when happens when you talk about more than 1 event in the past?

Slide 31 - Tekstslide

Clip
Next up will be a trailer for a World War 1 documentary called They Shall Not Grow Old, directed by Peter Jackson. Tip: use English subtitles!
To do:
Write down on a piece of paper as many verbs (werkwoorden) as you can as you see/hear them during this trailer.
Culture Fact:
November 11th is Remembrance Day in the UK (dodenherdenking), where they take a moment to remember all the people that have lost their lives during English conflicts. The poppy (klaproos) is the symbol for this moment and is worn in public by a lot of people.

Slide 32 - Tekstslide

Slide 33 - Video

Some examples from the clip
"I was just sixteen and my father allowed me to go"
"I had just turned seventeen at the time"
"When they came to us they were frightened children and had to be made into soldiers"

In what tense (tijd) are these verbs (werkwoorden) written?

Slide 34 - Tekstslide

Past Perfect
When we talk about an action in the past that was finished before another action in the past we use 2 tenses (tijden):
past simple and past perfect

Tip: Take notes during the clip that is coming up!
