Example of variety

There were many rumours. It was said that Donald Trump bought a yacht in Holland. Others say he has been friends with Poetin for many years. It is even claimed that he used to be a spy.

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Intended meaning is the starting point of any communication
  • You need to think about the meaning you want to express. Then you select a grammatical structure that is appropriate to convey that meaning.
  • Very often you need to think about relationship in time. Do I need to use a present continuous or a present perfect, for example.
  • Very often you need to think about a relation such as cause and effect. You need to choose a correct particle clause (and linking word).

First they had been talking about leaving the EU, then they voted “yes”and now the British government is planning a strategy for a hard Brexit.

Because the common people felt that their interests were not best served by the current government and the EU, they decided to vote to leave the EU.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Register
  • The grammatical structures you choose should be in the right register (informal – formal)

  • The register also defines which vocabulary to use.

The blokes in the government did not do a damn to give
the people a hand who were in deep shit.
OR
The members of Parliament did not do their utmost to help
the people who were in dire circumstances.
