Learn how to describe what someone looks like and what kind of person they are in English.

What is happening?

Why is this important?

In your future job — in hospitality, retail, or healthcare — you will meet new people every day.

Sometimes you need to describe someone to a colleague, or in a report. Good English helps you communicate clearly and professionally.

• Describe a client to a colleague

• Give a desciption of a shoplifter

• Describe a patient to a colleague

• Recommend someone to a manager

Example: "Can you help that woman over there with the red hair and the walking stick?"

"She is cutomer friendly, a good listener and great team player. You should hire her."

What will you learn?

Describe what someone looks like — tall, short, blonde, dark.

Say what kind of person someone is — kind, funny, serious.

📝 Making sentences

Use adjectives correctly in an English sentence.

Use these words to describe how someone looks.

Body

Hair

• curly hair — curly hair

Describe the shoplifter to the police

Vocabulary: Personality

Use these words to describe what kind of person someone is.

kind — aardig

Helpful and warm towards others.

funny — grappig

Makes people laugh and smile.

smart — slim

Good at learning and solving problems.

friendly — vriendelijk

Easy to talk to and welcoming.

hardworking — hardwerkend

Works well and doesn't give up.

reliable — betrouwbaar

You can always count on this person.

Exercise 1: Which words describe you?

Choose words from the vocabulary and write them down. Choose from each category.

Exercise 2: Describe Yourself

Use the words from Exercise 1 and complete the sentences. Follow the order:

Exercise 3: Describe a Classmate

Choose a classmate and describe him or her. Use positive adjectives!

Sentence 1 — Personality

He / She is a friendly and hardworking person.

Sentence 2 — Appearance

He / She is tall and has curly hair.

Sentence 3 — Nationality

He / She is Syrian
