SHAKESPEARE
Introduction to Shakespeare's life and William Shakespeare 
William Shakespeare was born in Stratford upon Avon, England on 23 April 1564.
He married Anne Hatheway in 1585. They had 3 children, a daughter and a set of twins. Sadly, his son Hamnet died young.

Shakespeare wrote 37 plays. Genres:
1. Histories Examples Richard III (not in documentary )
2. Comedies Examples Midsummer Night’s Dream, As You Like It, Twelfth Night, Much Ado About Nothing
3. Tragedies Examples Hamlet, Othello, Macbeth, King Lear, Anthony and Cleopatra
4. Tragicomedies Examples The Tempest, The Winter’s Tale, Pericles, Cymbeline
He also wrote 154 sonnets and several narrative poems.
He added almost 3000 new words to the English language. He also explored the human condition, explaining to us how we think and feel, the human psyche.
In 1599, Shakespeare collaborated in the building of the Globe Theatre in London.
Shakespeare died in Stratford upon Avon on 23 April 1616 .

Shakespeare's Language: Early Modern English
Pronouns
  • Personal pronouns: thou (subject), thee (object), thy / thine (possessive) are used as familiar and sometimes derogatory form (cf. Dutch “jij / jou / jouw” and German “Du”);
  • the neutral / respectful forms are you / ye / your / yours.

Verb forms
  • 3rd person singular: besides modern forms in –s, we see older forms in –eth: he/she goeth = goes; taketh = takes; asketh = asks; hath = has; doth = does.
  • 2nd person singular forms often end in –est: thou goest = go; wantest = want; lovest = love; art = are; wert = were; hast = have; dost = do; didst = did; canst = can; couldst = could; shalt = shall; wilt = will; wouldst = would; may’est = may.

Verse and prose

Upper-class characters usually speak in blank verse: unrhymed iambic pentameter with occasional end rhyme for special effect. Lower-class characters almost always speak in prose.
