      • 1. At what age does adolescence end in the brain?
      • 2. What are the functions of the following parts of the brain?
          * prefrontal cortex
          * limbic system
          * striatum
      • 3. Why are rewards important to the teenage brain?
      • 4. Why do teenagers generally take more risks than adults?
      • 5. Why can risk-taking be useful from an evolutionary perspective?

      Slide 6 - Tekstslide

      1. At what age does adolescence end in the brain?
          There is no exact age when the brain suddenly becomes fully adult. Brain development continues through the 20s, especially in areas involved in planning, self-control, and decision-making. The often-mentioned age of 25 is therefore an approximation, not a strict biological cutoff.
      2. Functions of these parts of the brain:
          * Prefrontal cortex: involved in planning, reasoning, decision-making, controlling impulses, and thinking about consequences. It develops relatively slowly during adolescence.
          * Limbic system: involved in emotions, motivation, pleasure, and responses to emotionally important situations. It is particularly responsive during adolescence.
          * Striatum: part of the brain’s reward and motivation system. It helps us learn from rewards and encourages us to seek experiences that might produce a positive outcome.
      3. Why are rewards important to the teenage brain?
          The adolescent brain is especially sensitive to rewards, such as excitement, praise, money, new experiences, and social approval. Rewards can therefore strongly motivate teenagers’ behaviour. Social rewards, particularly approval from friends, can be especially influential.
      4. Why do teenagers generally take more risks than adults?
          Teenagers tend to have a highly responsive reward system while brain systems involved in self-control and evaluating long-term consequences are still developing. As a result, an exciting potential reward can sometimes outweigh consideration of the possible risks. Peer presence can increase this effect.
      5. Why can risk-taking be useful from an evolutionary perspective?
          Some risk-taking encourages young people to explore, become independent, meet new people, learn new skills, and leave familiar environments. For our ancestors, these behaviours could have helped adolescents find resources, establish social relationships, find partners, and eventually become independent adults. So adolescent risk-taking is not simply a flaw. In appropriate situations, it can support learning and adaptation.
      Do you recognize these changes in yourself?
      * Rewards: What feels rewarding to you?
      (phone, gaming, 'likes', winning)

      * Risk-taking: Do you take more risks now?
      (sports, trying new things, social situations)

      * Independence: Are you more independent now?
      (making your own choices, going out, planning things)
