Technicalities
  • Your introductions starts with an interesting hook, Give relevant information and end with an all-inclusive thesis statement, which outlines the path the body of your essay will take.
  • In the main body you give at least 2, but preferably 3 well-defined arguments in support of your thesis. Each argument should be worked out in a separate paragraph.

In the next paragraph you offer a brief rebuttal to a counterargument.
  • In the conclusion you restate your arguments and refer to the thesis yet avoid repetition. Put the issue in a wider context. Use a memorable final sentence.
  • Give your essay a suitable title and make sure there is a reference to the title somewhere in your essay. Do not use the working title of the proposed topic.

Technicalities
Do some brainstorming before you start planning your essay.

Using an outline to structure your essay helps but is not mandatory to hand in.
Use the information provided with the topics as a source for inspiration and quotations in one to six words only.
Use the MLA format for in-text references and a works cited list at the end of the essay.
Type a draft version, review your work critically, then produce a neat version.
Use the word count function in Word to count the number of words of your essay (excluding the outline!) and type the number at the bottom of the last page.
Put your name, year level, subject, teacher and the date on every page.
Follow the instructions of the invigilators as to saving and printing your work.
