Summarise the video in 5-8 sentences: How do you write an essay? What are the most important elements?

Essay writing: Introduction
  1.  Hook: To get your readers attention
  2. Context: describe what happens in the book, but keep it relevant to your task.
  3. Thesis statement/claim: what will you be arguing, what point are you defending.
Important: Your thesis statement is the most important sentence of your essay, make sure you make your point clear.

Essay writing: body paragraphs
  1.  Topic sentence: What is your point for this paragraph
  2. Paraphrase: give more information about topic sentence/say it differently
  3. Insert Evidence: use a quote or paraphrase what happens. Make sure it is relevant to the topic sentence.
  4. Explain why the evidence is relevant for your argument and conclude with a sentence in which you explain why it supports your thesis statement/claim.
Important: All sentences in a body paragraph should be related to the topic sentence.

Essay writing: Conclusion
  1.     "In conclusion", "All in all", "To summarize", "To conclude"
  2.  Summarise your points in different words
  3.  What is the outcome of your arguments? Hopefully your claim!
  4.  Tell readers why your argument matters/add a personal touch.

Check for spelling and grammar mistakes
Rewrite awkward sentences

  • Get your writing prompt in front on you
  • Take another look at your essay, what can you do better still?
  • Review your own essay and help each other to find mistakes.
  • Make sure you have an intoduction, body paragraph(s) and a conclusion.
  • Pay attention to your claim, topic sentence(s) and your evidence. (PIE)
