Lesson 3.6: Explaining the Problem in the Reserve

Why aren't new Chalta Trees growing?

Open with the anchor phenomenon: many new trees are growing in the reserve, but not chalta trees. Keep the focus on the science question of seed dispersal.

Our learning goal

I can explain why the chalta seeds in the Bengal Tiger Reserve are not getting to places where they can grow.

Chalta trees are not growing in new places. Today, we have to figure out why.

What do you think a seed needs to grow into a tree?

What Can Help Move the Seeds?

"Scientists, seeds need help traveling to new places! Some seeds blow in the wind. Some stick to animals, and some float on water.

Look at each seed. Can you match it to the helper that moves it?

Let's see if we can get all three seeds to their new homes!"

Elephants Are Seed Helpers!

  1. Eat fruit

  1. Carry seeds

  1. Seeds can grow

Scientists, remember how we learned that animals can help seeds travel?

Well, elephants have a very important job! They eat fruit from chalta trees.

The seeds travel inside their bodies as they walk through the forest.

When elephants poop, the seeds come out in a new place!

Those seeds may grow into new chalta trees.

So elephants aren't just eating lunch. They're helping the forest grow!

What would happen if the elephants couldn't walk through the forest anymore?

Use simple cause-and-effect language: animal eats fruit, moves, leaves droppings, seeds are dispersed.

Order the steps!

more trees grew 🌳

Why Aren't Chalta Seeds Reaching New Places?

Elephants move seeds.

A fence was built.

A

The seeds don't need to travel.

B

The elephants can't move through the reserve like before.

C

The trees don't make seeds anymore.

Okay, scientists! We have all our clues.

We know elephants eat chalta fruit and carry seeds to new places.

We also know a fence was built, and scientists haven't seen elephants inside the reserve since then.

So, what do you think is happening to the chalta seeds?

Look at our answer choices and use the clues to solve the mystery!

Fill in the blanks

  1. A fence was built around the reserve.

  2. The elephants are not moving through the reserve.

  3. Without elephants, fewer seeds reach new places.
