Rule 1: With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you place the verb at the beginning of the sentence.

Are you the principal?
Can you tell the time?
May I go to the bathroom?

Rule 2: With any other (main) verb, you add an extra verb to the beginning of the sentence: to do (do or does). The main verb changes to the infinitive. You use do with I, you, we and they. You use does with he, she and it.

Do you use your notebook?
Does he study a lot?

Questions - have vs have got
To make a question with to have, you add do or does, but when you make a question with have got, have or has moves to the front of the sentence

You have got a break at one pm.        
Have you got a break at one pm?        

You have a break at one pm.
Do you have a break at one pm?

Maak een ontkenning van: 

You like animals.
John likes animals.

Negations
Rule 1: With the verb to be and auxiliary verbs like can, may and will, you add the word not after the verb.

Note! Can + not is written as one word: cannot. Is not, are not and cannot can be shortened to isn't, aren't and can't. The short form of will not is won't.

You aren't at home. / You are not at home.
We can't come now. / We cannot come now. 
They won't listen. / They will not listen.

Negations
Rule 2: With any other (main) verb, you add an extra verb: to do (do or does). You place to do + not after the subject. You put infinitive form of the (main) verb after to do + not. You use do not or the short form don't with I, you, we and they. You use does not or the short form doesn't with he, she and it.

I like maths.
I do not like / don’t like maths.
He knows the answer.
He does not know / doesn’t know the answer.

To make a negation with to have, you add to do + not. With to have got you add not or -n't after have or has.

I have a sister.
I do not have / don't have a sister.

She has got a brother.
She has not got / hasn't got a brother.
