Maths Words We Use

Deze slide heeft geen instructies

Our learning goal

I can understand and use important maths vocabulary.

Deze slide heeft geen instructies

What maths words do you know already?

Use this as a quick activation. Accept single words or short phrases such as add, minus, shape, equal, total, divide or angle.

Why maths words matter

Maths has special words.

These words help us:

  • read questions

  • explain ideas

  • solve problems

  • check answers

Keep language simple and concrete. Emphasise that understanding the words helps before any calculation starts.

Word and meaning

A maths word has a clear meaning.

When you know the word, you know what to do.

Example:

  • add means put numbers together

  • equal means the same value

Words can show actions

Some maths words tell us an action.

  • add

  • subtract

  • multiply

  • divide

You can gesture the actions or write one quick number example for each word aloud, but keep the slide vocabulary-focused.

Words can show size or amount

Some words describe numbers.

  • greater than = bigger

  • less than = smaller

  • equal to = the same

  • difference = how much is left between numbers

Make sure students do not confuse 'difference' with 'different'. In maths, difference links to subtraction or the gap between numbers.

Words help us read questions

In a question, key words give clues.

Example:

  • total often means add

  • left often means subtract

  • shared equally means divide

Say 'often' rather than 'always' so students do not overgeneralise keywords.

Which word means the same value?

A

difference

B

equal

C

greater than

D

subtract

Checks core meaning from the first vocabulary block. Distractors are real maths words from nearby slides.

Maths words and clues

In maths, words help us know what to do. add means put numbers together. equal means the same value. In questions, total often means add, and left often means subtract.

All blanks come from slides 3 to 6 and match the exact phrasing used there.

Addition words

These words often connect to addition:

  • add

  • plus

  • sum

  • total

  • altogether

  • in all

Subtraction words

These words often connect to subtraction:

  • subtract

  • minus

  • take away

  • difference

  • fewer

  • left

Multiplication and division words

These words often connect to:

Multiplication

  • multiply

  • times

  • product

Division

  • divide

  • shared equally

  • quotient

If 'quotient' feels advanced for the group, present it as a word they may see, not one they must use often.

Which word often means subtraction?

A

altogether

B

product

C

left

D

times

Tests keyword recognition across operation vocabulary.

Operation words

Some words show operations. sum and total connect to addition. Difference and fewer connect to subtraction. Product connects to multiplication, and shared equally connects to division.

angle
perimeter

digit

Supports vocabulary sorting from slides 7 to 9. The abstract nouns are used because students have just seen them in lists.

Shape words

Maths also has shape words.

  • triangle has 3 sides

  • square has 4 equal sides

  • rectangle has 4 sides

  • angle is the space between 2 lines

Measurement words

We use words for measuring too.

  • length

  • width

  • height

  • area

  • perimeter

You may briefly remind students that perimeter is around a shape and area is inside a shape.

Number value words

Some words describe value and place.

  • digit = one number symbol

  • place value = a digit's value by position

  • even = in the 2 times table

  • odd = not in the 2 times table

Using the right word

Good maths talk is clear.

Say:

  • 'The sum is 12.'

  • '8 is greater than 5.'

  • 'The perimeter is 20 cm.'

The right word shows the right idea.

Model accurate sentence stems slowly for EAL learners. Students benefit from hearing full sentences, not only isolated terms.

What is the space between 2 lines?

A

area

B

angle

C

length

D

square

Checks understanding of shape and measurement vocabulary.

Shape and value words

A triangle has 3 sides. A square has 4 equal sides. The distance around a shape is perimeter. One number symbol is a digit, and a digit's value by position is called place value.

3 sides

area
angle

This consolidates slides 10 to 13 with key taught definitions and sentence patterns.

Write one maths sentence with a key word.

Encourage one short sentence using any correct maths word from the lesson, for example: 'The sum is 10.' '8 is greater than 6.' 'The perimeter is 12 cm.' Focus on clear use of vocabulary, not perfect grammar.

What is one new maths word you learned?

Reflection only. Invite brief answers such as 'sum and total' or 'difference'.

What helped you understand the words best?

Reflection only. Students may mention pictures, examples, sentence stems, or word lists.
