Writing an essay
1)   Introduction - general facts narrowing down to thesis statement (= last sentence with point you want to "prove"/support in the next paragraphs) - Everyone loves pets. (Most people have one: a pet. Dogs and cats are both popular. Dogs are fun ... However, cats make  better pets than dogs)

2)   Supporting paragraph 1 - Linking word (First of all, ...) & Argument/Point; Explain; Example  (First of all, cats are low maintenance pets.)

3) Supporting paragraph 2 - Linking word (First of all, ...) & Argument/Point; Explain; Example  (Moreover, cats keep pests at bay.)

4) Supporting paragraph 3 - Linking word (First of all, ...) & Argument/Point; Explain; Example  (Last but not least, cats are perfectly content indoors)

5) Conclusion - sum up arguments (1 sentence per argument) OR give the most convincing argument mentioned above. End by proving your thesis statement. (Pets give us a lot of pleasure, but as we all have busy lives, we want them to be fun, low maintenance and useful. Therefore cats make better pets than dogs.)
