Respectful Behaviour: Knowing What's Right

Which people can we hug?

Which people can we hit?

Which people can we kiss?

Which people can we dance with?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will know which behaviours are suitable with staff, friends, family, strangers, and partners, and how to check for consent.

Why is it important to respect people?

Why Respectful Behaviour Matters

Everyone has different feelings about touching and closeness. We must think about others and make sure we are respectful.

Acting with People We Know

Family & Close Friends

Handshake or wave is usually OK. Do not kiss. You can ask for a sidehug. Always use kind words and respect personal space.

Staff

Hug, handshake, fist bump, or kiss on the cheek may be OK. Always check if the other person is happy with this.

With Strangers and Boyfriends/Girlfriends

Do not touch or hug strangers. Waving or saying hi is OK. Keep a safe distance.

Boyfriends/Girlfriends

Strangers

Hug, kiss or hand-holding can be OK if both agree. Always ask first and listen to the answer.

What is Consent?

Consent means asking someone if you can do something, like giving a hug, and only doing it if they say 'yes'.

Saying Yes or No is OK

Everyone has the right to say 'yes' or 'no' to touch. Respect their answer. If someone says 'no', do not touch them.
