Use We use the past simple for actions that started and ended in the past. Usually there is a very specific time indication in past simple sentences.

  • Last year I travel(l)ed to Japan.
  • He arrived from the airport at 8:00, checked into the hotel at 9:00, and met the others at 10:00 this morning.

Regular (ww+ed) and irregular (change in form s.a. in buy-bought)
I worked really hard last year (work)

vs. I was in London last year. (be)

Negations (x) /interrogatives (?): 'did (not) + verb' if there is no form of 'to be'. Otherwise 'was/were (not) + verb'
I did not/didn't work hard last year (work)
vs. I was not/wasn't in London last year. (be)

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Used to / would + verb
Use: Past simple construction used to describe an action (handeling) that frequently/occasionally took place in the past, but not anymore.*

I used to be / would be a lot less confident when I was younger.
Luckily, my self-esteem has grown over time.
I didn't use to like brussels sprouts, but now I do (negation).

* In case of a situation/circumstance in the past (rather than an action) we  only use 'used to'  and not 'would'
