Area: The number of square units that cover a shape. Square unit: A small square (like 1cm x 1cm) used to measure area. Rows: Lines of squares going across. Columns: Lines of squares going down. Multiplication: Adding equal groups together quickly.

Warm-Up: How Many Squares?

Let’s look at the tiles on the classroom floor or use paper squares. How can we find out how many squares cover a small rug or mat? Count together! Teacher question: How would you count the squares? Why? Expected student response: 'We can count them one by one or in groups.'

What Is Area?

Area is the amount of space a shape covers. We find area by counting how many square units fit inside a shape. Common misconception: Adding the sides. Instead, area is about covering the space inside!

Finding Area: Rows × Columns

Count every square unit in a rectangle one by one.

Step 2: Use Rows and Columns

Step 1: Count the Squares

Count the squares in one row and multiply by the number of rows. For example, 3 rows of 4 equals 3 × 4 = 12.

Try It Together!

Use grid paper or square tiles to build a 4×3 rectangle with a partner. Count the squares, talk about rows and columns, and write a multiplication sentence. Teacher question: 'How did you find the area?' Expected response: 'I counted squares/I used rows × columns.' Common misconception: Counting rows OR columns only.

Real-Life Area Hunt

Let’s find items in our class to measure: the class rug, a book cover, a table top. Use square sticky notes to cover the object and count how many fit. Try writing a multiplication equation for each!
