What Are Decimal Numbers?

Decimal numbers are numbers with a point (.) that separates the whole part from the fractional part, like 3.5.

Decimal numbers show values between whole numbers, e.g., 2.7, 9.01, 15.6.

Whole numbers are numbers without fractions or decimals, e.g., 4, 15, 82.

Parts of a Decimal

The digit before the dot is the whole number part; the digit(s) after the dot are the decimal part.

Reading Decimals

We read decimals by naming the whole number, saying 'point,' then naming each digit after the decimal point, e.g., 4.23 as 'four point two three.'

Decimals in Real Life

Decimals are used in money, measurements, and science. For example, £2.50 or 1.75 metres.

Comparing Decimals

Compare digits after the decimal point, e.g., 3.4 > 3.2.

The decimal with the larger whole number is bigger, e.g., 5.2 > 4.8.
