What is an argumentative essay?

• An essay on the advantages or disadvantages of some current issue.

• A formal piece of writing in which a topic is considered from your point of view.
  

• Your aim is to convince the reader that your opinion is the right one.

Example essay

Let's take a look at the example essay on the Magister SW together.

Pay close attention to what is discussed in each paragraph.

Rules to think about

1. Use formal/ neutral language (no 'want'/ 'gonna'/ etc.)
2. No contracted forms (it's = it is)
3. Try to avoid the use of 'I'.
4. Try to avoid 'But' and 'And' at the beginning of a sentence. Instead of 'But' use 'However,'. Skip the full stop before 'And'.

• Kies 1 van de onderwerpen op blz. 1. Wil je zelf een onderwerp bedenken? Overleg eerst met mij voordat je verder gaat!
  
• Maak een plan voor je essay. Je schrijft dus nog niet het hele essay. Op dit moment maak je alleen een indeling. Bedenk alvast hoe je je essay gaat introduceren, welke argumenten je gaat bespreken en wat jouw mening is.
• Lever je werk aan het eind van de les in via Magister Opdrachten.
