Starter Activity: Light Detective

Imagine you are a detective! Hold up objects like paper, water bottle, sunglasses and predict if you can see your friend’s face through them. Discuss: Why do some objects let us see through them, and others do not?

Success Criteria

You will know you are successful when you can: - Group objects by how they let light pass. - Explain why different materials behave differently with light. - Analyse real-life uses of transparent, translucent, and opaque materials.

Key Vocabulary

Transparent: lets all light pass through. Translucent: lets some light pass through. Opaque: does not let light pass through.

Why do you think your sunglasses are not made from paper? What would happen if windows were made of bricks?

Transparent Materials

Transparent objects like glass and clean water let light pass through them. We see clearly through these materials.

Translucent Materials

Translucent objects like frosted glass and tracing paper let only some light through. They look blurry or foggy.

Opaque Materials

Opaque objects like wood, metal, or stone block all light. You cannot see through them at all.

Main Activity: Sorting Challenge

In groups, look at objects (glass, leaf, thick book, plastic bag, aluminium foil). Sort them as transparent, translucent, or opaque. Discuss with your group and write your reasons.

Differentiated Tasks

Draw a picture to show what you see through each type of material. Write a sentence to describe how the light looks for each.

Task 1 (Identify, Arrange, Note)

Identify and list 3 objects at home or in class for each group: transparent, translucent, opaque. Arrange them in a table.

UAE Connections

In the UAE, skyscrapers like Burj Khalifa use a lot of glass (transparent) for windows. Mosques use stained glass (translucent) to create colourful light. Why do you think this is useful in our hot, sunny country?

Plenary: Thumbs Up or Down

Thumbs up if: Light passes through glass window. Thumbs down if: Light passes through a wooden door. Thumbs up if: You can see shapes but not details through frosted glass.

Homework Choices

Must: Find 2 objects at home and classify them as transparent, translucent, or opaque. Should: Take photos and explain why you sorted them this way. Could: Imagine and draw a ‘Super House’ using all 3 material types. Label and describe your choices.
