Themes and storylines
In order to understand what literature, in word or film, is all about, we need to understand what makes a story: what does it consist of, what makes it work the way it does? In order to do that, we are going to find the themes of your books or movies, but….. what are themes? Let’s have a look at this video:

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

Goals
  • compare and contrast literary and cinematographic works of art.
  • analyse horizontal and vertical aspects of these works
  • find themes, distinguish relationships and what is and what is not important in the story
  • present your findings to your peers, in speaking and writing
  • to create a learning environment that teaches you something about yourself
  • to focus on the major themes of the story that your group has chosen.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Handout
  • Explains the horizontal storyline
  • Explains all the themes that your group has found (at least three!).
  • Is enticing with colour pictures, a nice font, an introduction, a body and a conclusion.
  • In the conclusion you need to reflect on the assignment and the roles each member has played in completing the tasks
  • There is a literature list in the handout

The difference between a horizontal and vertical storyline

A horizontal storyline is the story in itself: the plot with the characters and all the adventures they have.
The vertical storyline of a story, book or movie is the atmosphere and the emotion and feelings that come along with it. What we expect from you is not only to explain and show to us the plot of your story and tell us all about the characters, i.e. the horizontal storyline, but also to let us ‘feel’ the story, i.e. the vertical storyline. You can achieve that by, for instance, acting out a scene from the story of play or sing one of the songs from the story.

What is a theme?
  • Theme is the central idea of the story.
  • A literary theme is the main idea or underlying meaning a writer explores in a novel, short story, or other literary work.
  • The theme of a story can be conveyed using characters, setting, dialogue, plot, or a combination of all of these elements.
  • It is better if it is a full statement, with a subject and a verb.
  • It sums up what the story shows us about the human condition. It is not a moral.
  • It is simply a statement.
