Summary of "The Interlopers" by Saki

The story takes place on a winter night in a forest on the eastern spurs of the Carpathian Mountains. Ulrich von Gradwitz, a wealthy landowner, patrols the woods alone, armed with a rifle. He is not hunting animals but searching for his enemy, Georg Znaeym. The two families have been feuding for three generations over a narrow strip of forest land. Though the courts awarded the land to Ulrich's family, Georg's family refuses to accept the judgment and continues to poach there.

When Ulrich and Georg finally meet face to face, they stand glaring at each other, each with murder in his heart. Before either can act, a violent windstorm uproots a massive beech tree, which falls on both men, pinning them to the ground. Trapped and helpless, they initially trade insults and threats. But as hours pass and they face the possibility of dying together, their hatred begins to melt away. Ulrich offers Georg his flask of wine, then proposes they end the feud and become friends. After a moment of hesitation, Georg agrees. The two men, now intervened, shout together for help. They see figures approaching in the moonlight and believe rescue is at hand. However, the final line of the story reveals a shocking twist: the figures approaching are not men, but a pack of hungry wolves.

The story explores themes of inherited hatred, the power of nature over human conflict, the possibility of reconciliation, and the cruel unpredictability of fate.
