Speaking practice part 3

Slide 1 - Tekstslide

CAE speaking part 1
Two- way conversation between candidates and examiner. This lasts for 2 minutes and you should be able to ask and answer personal questions. This part tests your ability to use general. interactional and social language.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

CAE speaking part 2
You have one minute to talk about two out of three pictures you will be given. You need to answer 2 questions while comparing and speculating about the photo. This part lasts 4 minutes and tests your ability to describe, speculate, compare and comment during a longer and organised conversation.

The Problem
You will always be asked to speculate about something which relates to the focus of the photos and you will never be asked to merely describe the photos. Many students  find it particularly difficult to not get bogged down with photo description. As a result, they usually spend 40 seconds describing what they see instead of performing the actual task.

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

The Solution
In order to help us break free from this "description habit", I have decided to start using prompts which don't contain any visuals.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

Typical Questions:

How might the people be feeling?

What might they be thinking?

Why are they doing this?

What has just happened?

Get in to pairs - p.39
  • One of you is student A and the other student B
  • Student B sets the timer on their phone to one minute.
  • Student B needs a pen to tick off the number of times a "speculation" is made.
  • Student A needs to  choose TWO of the prompts and discuss the questions in the task for one minute using as many speculations as possible
  • NOW SWITCH PARTNERS

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

I’m going to give each of you three pictures. I’d like you to talk about two of them on your own for about a minute, and also to answer a question briefly about your partner’s pictures.

(Candidate A), it’s your turn first. Here are your pictures. They show places in which food is prepared differently.

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Candidate A: I’d like you to compare two of the pictures and say why people might be interested in eating each place, and what food would be like in each place.(1 minute)

CandidateB: In which place do you think you might get the healthiest food? (Why?)

(approximately 30 seconds)

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Now, Candidate B, here are your photos.

They show people doing different types of exercise.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Candidate B:I’d like you to compare two of the pictures and say why people might have chosen to do this type of exercise, and how effective each type of exercise might be.
Candidate A, which type of exercise do you think is the most effective? (Why?)

(approximately 30 seconds)

Part 3: Collaborative task

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Part 3 (4 minutes)

Part 3 of the speaking exam is a two-way interaction between candidates and lasts 4 minutes. You discuss a problem solving task and are tested on your ability to interact, exchange ideas, express opinions, agree/disagree, evaluate and reach a decision.

Now, I’d like you to talk about something together for about two minutes.

Here are some different types of tasks you might be given as part of a job interview and a question for you to discuss.

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

Now, talk to each other about what each of following job interview tasks might enable employers to learn about candidates.  (1 minute)
