Questioning
Visual aids
Reviewing colour card to find out colour history
By identifying the clients requirements, you can then start to think about the best colouring technique to use.
REMEMBER!!! Just because a client has been booked in for a particular service does not mean it is necessarily the BEST service for them to have. You are the expert and should advise your client on alternative services if you think they would give the client a better end result
Identify factors which may influence
the service
Once you have identified the client requirements, you need to make sure the service can be carried out.
On the next slide, write as many factors as you can think of, and how they impact on the service

Identify factors that may influence
the service
As well as factors, we also need to consider contra indications. Remember, contra indications will limit or prevent a service from being carried out.

Other known allergies
Skin disorders
Incompatible products
Medical advice or instructions
Evident hair damage
Age restrictions
Identify factors that may influence
the service
History of previous allergic reaction to colouring products
A client with a history of reactions is more at risk to reactions in the future. Alternative services should be offered avoiding application directly to the scalp
Other known allergies
These clients may be more sensitive to ingredients in colouring products. You must check what they are allergic to and then offer alternative services if necessary.
Identify factors that may influence
the service
Skin disorders
Skin disorders will prevent colour services being carried out in some cases. Colour services should NOT be carried out if the client has an infection or infestation or broken or bleeding wounds. Clients with eczema and psoriasis can have their hair coloured as long as the area is not experiencing a flare up.
Incompatible products
If there are products on the client’s hair which are incompatible with colouring products the service must not be carried out. Alternative services could be offered.
Identify factors that may influence the service
Medical advice or instructions
If a client has medical advice this must always be followed.
Evident hair damage
If the hair is damaged, you must avoid carrying out additional chemical services. Consider kinder colouring services if the hair would allow while you treat the condition
Age restrictions
If the colour manufacturer states the colour cannot be carried out on under 16 you cannot carry out the service. This would be in breach of the manufacturer's instructions and could mean your insurance is invalid if an issue was to arise.
