Een werkwoord (verb) kan soms worden gebruikt als zelfstandig naamwoord (noun). Wanneer een werkwoord deze rol aanneemt spreek je van een gerund (werkwoord + ing).

De gerund is niets anders dan een werkwoord waar je +ing achter zet

Laten we eerst even kijken naar voorbeelden van wat de gerund NIET is:

- I am watching a video.
- He is playing with his brother.
- She was doing her homework.

GERUND

Laten we nu kijken naar voorbeelden van wat de gerund WEL is:
- I love playing a game tonight.
- Laughing is good for you.
- Susie likes shopping.
Hier wordt het werkwoord+ing, gebruikt als zelfstandig naamwoord. Je spreekt dan van de gerund. Dus een werkwoord als zelfstandig naamwoord is de gerund.

Wanneer gebruik je een gerund (1)
Na werkwoorden waarmee je aangeeft wat je wel of niet leuk vindt: (like, dislike, love, hate, fancy, envy, enjoy):

- I like running on the street!
- I love doing my homework when I am at home.
Na zintuigelijke werkwoorden: (see, watch, hear, smell, feel):
- I watched him kayaking trough that river.
- Did you hear him screaming that loud before?

- She can't stand dancing with him.
- It makes no sense waiting for that boat.
Na voorzetsels:
- He eats his breakfast before heading out to work.
- My sister loves to think about leaving her house and going on a journey.

Je gebruikt de '-ing vorm' als een soort zelfstandig naamwoord:

 1. Als het onderwerp van de zin.
Example: Biking in the mall is forbidden. 

2. Na voorzetsels. (kastwoorden)
Example: She's fond of cycling.

3. Na werkwoorden die zeggen hoe je iets vindt. (like, love, hate, enjoy, etc.)
