Explanation Past Perfect Passive
Past Perfect Passive: There are two points in the past you want to talk about. One thing happened before the other and you want to make clear which one happened first and which one happened second. 
The Past Perfect is the tense that happened the furthest away in the past.
One day he arrived home to find that his brother had been killed in an explosion.
