Een actieve zin heeft een onderwerp dat de actie uitvoert.
Bijvoorbeeld: 'The cat caught the mouse.'

Een passieve zin heeft een onderwerp dat de actie ondergaat.
Bijvoorbeeld: 'The mouse was caught by the cat .'

Structuur van een Passieve Zin
Een passieve zin heeft de volgende structuur:

lijdend voorwerp      +       vorm van be       +     voltooid deelwoord 

(+ by + onderwerp)

Bijvoorbeeld: The mouse was caught (by the cat).

Lijdend Voorwerp
Het lijdend voorwerp is het onderwerp dat de actie ondergaat in een actieve zin. 

Bijvoorbeeld: 'The cat caught the mouse.' 
Het lijdend voorwerp is 'the mouse'.
Het onderwerp is 'the cat''

Voltooid Deelwoord
Het voltooid deelwoord is de vorm van het werkwoord die wordt gebruikt in de passieve zin. (3e rij)

Bijvoorbeeld: The mouse was caught by the cat.
 Het voltooid deelwoord is 'caught'.

Door Wie?
Het onderwerp van de actieve zin wordt weergegeven met het woord 'door' in de passieve zin.

 
Bijvoorbeeld: The mouse was caught by the cat.
 'By the cat' laat zien wie de actie uitvoert in de actieve zin.

Stappenplan passive
1. Kijk naar de actieve zin, ontleed deze:
  Wat is het onderwerp, wat is het lijdend voorwerp, wat is het werkwoord en in welke tijd staat deze?
2. Zet het lijdend voorwerp vooraan in de zin.
3. Vul een vorm van be in de zin in (gebruik hierbij de goede tijd!)
4. Maak van het werkwoord een voltooid deelwoord.
5. Maak de zin af met by + het onderwerp
