Je gebruikt de past simple present perfect simple voor twee dingen: 
1. Iets is in het verleden gebeurd, ooit een keer, het is niet belangrijk wanneer het is gebeurd maar alleen dat het is gebeurd.

I haven't finished my meal yet
Has your friend helped you with this? 
2. met for + tijdsduur  en since + tijdstip: iets is in het verleden begonnen en loopt door tot en met het heden. 
I've loved Harry Potter since I was little
I haven't seen her since earlier this morning
Has he been your friend for a long time?
