The Genitive

When do we use it?

1. To describe possession (aangeven van wie/wat iets is).

2. Reference to places, events, buildings (from people) in bezittelijke context

How do we use it?

noun (zelfstandig naamwoord) + 's 

Bijv (1). My sister's boyfriend wears glasses.

Bijv (2). Last week's meeting was very interesting./ I'll get it checked at the doctor's.

The Genitive

Is je zelfstandig naamwoord meervoud en eindigt het met een s? Voeg dan alleen een ' toe.

Bv. The students' phones are very new. 

Maar: The children's corner was closed today. 

Dit mag ook bij namen die eindigen op een s

Bv. He forgot to bring Charles'  / Charles's  present to the party. 

The Genitive

Let op: om aan te geven dat iets van/in/uit een bepaalde plaats is zet je de plaatsnaam voor het zelfstandig naamwoord (zonder 's).

Bijv. A Dutch student or The London Eye.

Practice

Hierna volgen oefeningen. Maak een genitive van de woorden tussen haakjes. Als antwoord geef je alleen de genitive, niet de hele zin. Let op je spelling!
