Exercise 1 - Past Simple

  1. Last week, I visited (visit) my friend in the city.
  2. She bought (buy) a new dress for the party.
  3. We had (have) a delicious dinner at the new restaurant.
  4. He watched (watch) a movie on Saturday night.
  5. I didn’t (= did not) see (not/see) that movie last weekend.
  6. She didn’t (= did not) find (not/find) her keys in the morning.
  7. We  didn’t (= did not) eat  (not/eat) at the new restaurant.
  8. He didn’t (= did not) watch (not/watch) TV last night.
  9. The cat didn’t (= did not) catch (not/catch) the mouse.

Exercise 2 - Past Continuous:                                                   was/were + (not) ww-ing

  • 10. While I was reading (read) a book, the rain was falling (fall).
  • 11. They were playing (play) video games when I arrived
  • 12. She was cooking (cook) dinner while he was cleaning (clean) the house.
  • 13. I was studying (study) while the music was playing (play) in the background.
  • 14. While we were having (have) a picnic, the kids were playing (play) nearby.
  • 15. I wasn't (was not) reading (not/read) a book when the phone rang
  • 16. They weren't (were not) playing__ (not/play) basketball when it suddenly started to rain.
  • 17. She wasn't (was not) cooking (not/cook) dinner while he was watching (watch) TV.
  • 18. I wasn't (was not) studying (not/study) when the lights suddenly went out.

Exercise 3 - Mixed Sentences (Past Simple and Past Continuous):

  • 19. Yesterday, while I was reading (read) a book, the phone rang (ring).
  • 20. When they arrived (arrive) at the party, everyone was dancing (dance).
  • 21. While she was cleaning (clean) the house, the kids were playing (play) outside.
  • 22. I was studying (study) for the exam when my friend visited (visit) me.
  • 23. He traveled (travel) to Paris and took (take) many photos.
  • 24. I didn’t (did not) see (not/see) the movie because the cinema was (be) closed.
  • 25. They didn’t (did not) eat (not/eat) pizza for dinner.
  • 26. I was watching (watch) a movie, when the storm began (begin).
  • 27. She didn’t (did not) know (not/know) the answer when the teacher                             asked (ask) the question.

Past Simple:
  • Iets dat in het verleden is gebeurd (is al afgelopen)
  • Gewone zin werkwoord + ed, of de uitzondering die je hebt geleerd
  • ontkennende zin didn’t (did not) = hele werkwoord

Past Continuous
  • Iets was een tijdje bezig in het verleden
  • Gewone zin was/were + werkwoord – ing
  • Ontkennende zin was not (wasn’t)/were not (weren’t) + werkwoord -ing

Soms gebruik je de Past Simple en de Past Continuous in dezelfde zin.
De lange actie is dan in de Past Continuous, de korte actie (de onderbreking) is in de Past Simple
I was watching (watch) a movie, when the phone rang.

Waarom?    Veel fouten bij woordjes en grammatica, teveel                                      onrust, er gaat veel tijd verloren

Doel?            Voorkomen van onrust, zorgen voor een optimale                                leeromgeving

  • Eind van de les tafel leeg en stoel aanschuiven. (telefoonkluis blijft dicht)

  • Naam op bord = gratis waarschuwing
  • 1 streepje achter je naam = na de les helpen klas netjes maken
  • 2 streepjes achter je naam = 1 pagina met woordjes overschrijven (Engels woord, Nederlands woord + voorbeeld zin. Docent zegt welke pagina. Volgende Engelse les inleveren. Niet gedaan? Twee pagina's)
  • 3 streepjes achter je naam = blauw
