Je kunt can, could, may of might gebruiken
Can- kan (is waarschijnlijk)         It can become very hot in Australia.
Could- zou kunnen, kon (vt) en ook beleefde vorm (iets minder waarschijnlijk.     It could become very cold tomorrow.
May- kan (nog minder waarschijnlijk) of mag.    It may become hot tomorrow, but only if the sun manages to come out.     You may go outside after you've finished your homework.
Might - kan (zo goed als onwaarschijnlijk) of zou mogen.    It might become hot tomorrow, but since it's still winter, it's unlikely.   I might come to your party, but I still have to ask my parents.

Could gebruik je voor iets dat je mogelijk kan doen of in de verleden tijd. I could do the split when I was 10.
To be able to kun je met elke tijd gebruiken (ook toekomst en voltooid)
She is able to help us (ze kan ons helpen)
She was able to help us (ze kon ons helpen)
She has been able to help us (ze heeft ons kunnen helpen)
She will be able to help us (ze zal ons kunnen helpen)

Toestemming
Om aan te geven dat iets van iemand mag kun je can, could, may of be allowed to gebruiken.
Can gebruik je alleen in de present simple.
Could gebruik je als vt voor can
May is formeler
to be allowed to kan met alle tijden gebruikt worden.
I am allowed to go to the party. (Ik mag naar het feestje)
I was allowed to go to the party. (Ik mocht naar het feestje)
I have been allowed to stay up after 9 since I was 12 (Ik mocht al na 9 uur opblijven sinds ik 12 was)
I will be allowed to use my parents' car when I get my drivers license.

Iets is noodzakelijk -  You have to brush your teeth before bed. 
Iets moet - I have to help my mother make the beds.

Iets is noodzakelijk of moet (formeler dan have to) - You must make your homework on time!
Om aan te geven dat het heel belangrijk is - You must use a soft cloth to clean your glasses.
Om aan te geven dat het echt niet anders kan of het moet wel zo zijn - She must be thirsty. It's really hot outside.
They must be tired, they haven't slept all night.

Als je advies geeft - You should write a thank you note to your grandmother for her nice birthday gift.

Future tense
Will/ Shall + hele werkwoord
  • Bij spontaan besluit, weigering, verzoek, voorstel, belofte.
(Someone drops an entire bucket of marbles accidentally.) "Don't worry, I will help you."
  • Als het plan ontstaat tijdens het gesprek. 
(You hang out with some friends and you are discussing what to do.) "Shall we go to the cinema?"
  • Voorspelling gebaseerd op mening
(You think your English sucks, but never had a test before this.) "I don't think I will get a good mark for English."

To be going to + hele werkwoord
  • Als iets zeker gaat gebeuren.
(You see some thunderclouds approaching.) "Look! It is going to rain."
  • Als het plan er al is voor het gesprek plaats vindt. 
(You've bought tickets.) "We are going to go to the cinema."
  • Voorspelling gebaseerd op een aanwijzing. 
(You forgot to study for the test and you're not good at the subject.) "I am going to get a bad mark for English."

  • Bij persoonlijke plannen die zeker gaan gebeuren. 
Vaak kun je to be going to en de present continuous gebruiken.
Let op het verschil!
We are going to go to the cinema / We are going to the cinema (beide goed.)
