- understand what the past simple tense is and when to use it

- understand and  can use past simple sentences, negatives and questions.

1. Use of the Past Simple

We use the Past Simple to talk about activities and events that happened in the past. We often say when they happened.

e.g. I visited Berlin last week.

Adverbial phrases of time - to indicate when

last night/week/month/ year, etc.

Form - Past Simple 

regular verbs → infinitive + ed

irregular verbs → 2nd column of the table of the irregular verbs 

Past Simple 

Affirmative regular verbs

I cleaned my room. 

You cleaned your room.

He cleaned his room.

Affirmative irregular verbs

I went home. 

You went home.

He went home.

Negative regular & irregular verbs

Always use the auxiliary did (Past Simple of 'to do') and the infinitive (base form) of the verb for negatives.

There is no difference between regular and irregular verbs in negative sentences 

Regular verbs	Irregular verbs
I did not (or didn't) clean the room.	I did not (or didn't) break the lamp.
You did not (or didn't) clean the room.	You did not (or didn't) break the lamp.
He did not (or didn't) clean the room.	He did not (or didn't) break the lamp.

Yes/No Questions

You need the auxiliary did and the infinitive (base form) of the verb.

Did I play football? 

Did you play football?

Did he play football?

Wh- Questions

You need the auxiliary did and the infinitive (base form) of the verb.

When did you play football?

Where did he play football?

Change into a negative sentence:
I saw that film last night.

Change into a question:
He enjoyed his holiday last month.

Fill in: I ...... a home-made cake on my birthday!

Fill in: Did you ...... for a short break?

Fill in: Last weekend Jack ...... his arm.

Change into a negative sentence:
The plane landed an hour ago.

Change into an affirmative sentence:
My parents didn't study French at school.
