Walking in Someone Else's Shoes

Lesson 4

Learning Intention

Learning Intention: We are learning to understand and respect other people’s feelings and perspectives.

Success Criteria:

  • I can explain what empathy is.

  • I can show empathy by considering how others might feel.

What do you already know about empathy and understanding others?

Warm-up: Match the Emotion

Look at the pictures. Can you match each face to an emotion word? Why do you think they feel that way?

Empathy vs Sympathy

Sympathy

Empathy

Trying to understand how someone else is feeling by imagining yourself in their situation.

Feeling sorry that someone has a problem, but not necessarily understanding their feelings.

Role play activity: What's Happening?

Scenario 1: New Student

  • A new student joins the class and looks nervous during recess.

  • Group role-play: How could you help them feel included?

Scenario 2: Lost Toy

  • A student loses their favourite toy at lunchtime and is upset.

  • Role-play: How could you respond to show empathy?

Scenario 3: Mistake in Work

  • A student makes a mistake during class activity and another student laughs.

  • Role-play: How can you respond to be kind and supportive?

Scenario 4: Friendship Conflict

  • Two students want to play with the same ball and start arguing.

  • Role-play: How could you help both students feel understood and calm?

Scenario 5: Feeling Left Out

  • A student sits alone during group activity because others forgot to include them.

  • Role-play: How could the group show inclusion and empathy?

Scenario 6: Celebrating Success

  • A student is proud of a personal achievement but seems shy to share.

  • Role-play: How could classmates celebrate respectfully and supportively?

What do the people feel? What might they be thinking?

Role-Play: Show Empathy

In pairs, act out a situation where someone needs empathy. Swap roles and think about how to show understanding.
