3 characteristics of the EYFS (aims)
  1. Playing and Exploring.
  2. Active Learning.
  3. Creating and Thinking Critically.

The above 3 characteristics of effective learning are used to support practitioners in providing activities and opportunities for children.
It is with the intention to ensure children are becoming competent learners through skillful adult interaction.

3 sections of the EYFS 
Lets open the EYFS 2023. 
Section 1 - The Learning and development requirements. 
7 areas of learning (1.4) 3 x prime 4 x specific.
Educational programmes are the different activities we plan for children that promote the 7 areas of learning. 
The Early learning goals are also covered under the learning and development requirements.

Section 2 - Assessment 
Formative (on going assessments – observations and activity plans for children).
Summative (end assessment) – 2 year old check, EYFS profile, Reception baseline assessment)

The 2 year old Check: This is check completed in the family home by a health visitor where the development of the child will be checked in relation to the 3 prime areas of learning. Observations and concerns by the practitioner are normally supportive and given to the parents. 
The EYFS Profile: This completed by a practitioner before the child is 5 and will provide an accurate assessment on the child's outcomes in relation to the Early Learning Goals. 

Reception Baseline Assessment: This is an assessment completed in reception to help their teacher identify a starting point for numeracy, language & communication and literacy

This became Statutory in 2021.

Practice observations
In pairs you will observe your partner complete a drawing activity, they will need to use their least dominant hand.

You will need to make notes on the observation sheet. 
Once both observations are complete you will attempt to link to Early Learning Goals.

Early Learning Goals
Early learning goals are the educational targets set for children between the ages of 0-5 in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). 

For each area of development ( 7 ) there are early learning goals. This means when he practitioner observes and plans activities they should intent to track the process of these Early Learning Goals. 

Lets take a look in the EYFS 2023, this can be found on page 11.

Research Task 
 Follow on independent learning task
The legal scope of the EYFS 2023, is the legislations which underpins the EYFS 2023.  You have been asked to research all 7 legislations and how they have influenced the EYFS 2023.  
This task will be started in class today but will need to be completed by Tuesday 26th September 2023.
