Modal verbs (hulpwerkwoorden)
  • can= kan / mag iets doen
  • could= zou kunnen/ je kon iets (vroeger)/ beleefde manier van kunnen
  • should= zou moeten ( advies)
  • must= moet iets van jezelf/ van de spreker
  • to be able to= kunt iets/ je bent in staat om
  • to have to= je moet iets van iemand anders

can't/cannot=  kan niet
couldn't= kon niet
shouldn't = zou niet moeten
mustn't = moet je niet doen
don't / doesn't have to= hoeft niet
didn't have to= hoefde niet
am not/ isn't / aren't able to= zijn niet in staat om

Modal verbs veranderen normaal niet! Uitzonderingen:
 Een uitzondering is de modal verb have to.
-  Bij he/she/it verandert dit werkwoord in has to.
De andere uitzondering is to be able to: die verandert in 
am/ are/is/ was/ were able to

Modal verbs = 
 een catgorie van hulpwerkwoorden
Must & have to:
  • - Must drukt uit wat de spreker vindt dat moet gebeuren (internal obligation).'
  • I must go to the gym today.'    OR    'You have to go to work tomorrow.'
    - Bijv. I must go home now. You must go home now.
    -  Has to/ have to drukt uit dat er een regel is waaraan je je moet houden of dat je iets van een ander moet doen (external obligation).merk je het?
