Past Simple: uses
We use the PAST SIMPLE for actions that started and finished in the past.

Past Simple: Positives
- We just need our main verb, in its past tense. We add -ed behind regular verbs, and the irregular verbs you need to know by heart.

I                                    ate       slept       drank       wrote       relaxed
YOU                            ate        slept       drank       wrote       relaxed
SHE/HE/IT               ate        slept       drank       wrote       relaxed

Irregular verbs
Er zijn zo ongeveer 200 onregelmatige werkwoorden in het Engels. Deze moeten jullie uit jullie hoofd leren. We gebruiken deze alleen voor positieve zinnen

Bij negatieve- en vraagzinnen gebruiken we immers na did/didn't het hele werkwoord. Zie de  volgende slides.

De werkwoorden die jullie voor de toets moeten weten, staan op blz 127.

Slide 8 - Slide

Past Simple: Negatives
- We need our AUXILIARY DID, and the word NOT to make it negative, and then we need our main verb that we don't do anything to.

I                            didn't         eat sleep drink write relax
YOU                    didn't         eat sleep drink write relax
SHE/HE/IT       didn't         eat sleep drink write relax
WE                      didn't         eat sleep drink write relax
THEY                  didn't         eat sleep drink write relax

Slide 9 - Slide

Past Simple: Questions
? We need our auxiliary DID and the main verb that we don't do anything to.

Past Continuous: Usage
We use the PAST Continuous to talk about actions and states in progress (happening) around a particular time in the past.
In het Nederlands gebruiken we dan vaak ‘was aan het…’ of ‘waren aan het…’.

Signal words are: when, while, at (insert time)
  • When we got to the house yesterday morning, the baby was drinking a bottle.
  • He was waiting at home all day when she sent him the message.
  • Alan was cutting the grass the other day when the snake appeared.
  • I was not sleeping when you got home late last night.
