Brent asked (me) if I liked his shirt.

Present simple, present continuous

When we move the tense back to write the reported speech, present simple changes to past simple and the present continuous changes to past continuous.


'I travel a lot in my job.'
Jamila said that she travelled a lot in her job.
'The baby is sleeping!'
He told me the baby was sleeping.

Past simple and past continuous
When we move the tense back to write the reported speech, past simple usually changes to past perfect simple, and past continuous usually changes to past perfect continuous.

'We lived in China for five years.'
She told me they had lived in China for five years.
'It was raining all day.'
He told me it had been raining all day.

am/are/is going to, will, can, may/might, must/have to
am/are/is going to:
"I am going to report you."
She said she was going to report him.

will:
"She will never change."
He said she would never change

can:
"They can do so much better."
The teacher said that they could do so much better

may/might: don't change
"Yes, I might do that."
She said she might do that

must/have to: ALWAYS had to
"I have to do some homework.."
She said she had to do some homework.
"I must fix my bicycle".
My dad said he had to fix my bicycle.
