Reading strategies

1. Skimming: understanding the main idea and concept. 
2. Scanning: look for key/important information (for example: names, dates, numbers.
3. Intensive reading: read and understand the complete text.

Skimming

1. Read the title 
2. Read the introduction 
3. Search for the source (=bron) of your text
4. Look at pictures / images 
5. Look at bold or underlined words or words in italics. 

When I skim I do this:

Scanning 

1. Read the title and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
2. Look for keywords that tell you more about what you are looking for in a text
3. Look at bold or underlined words or words in italics. 

When do you use the reading technique scanning?

1. Deciding if you want to read a news article or not.
2. Reading and understanding a complete text.
3. When you look for a date of birth.
4. While reading a recipe.

Intensive reading 

1. Read the complete text 
2. Pay attention to the introduction and subheadings (=tussenkopjes)
3. Look for the most important sentences and words 
4. Look up the meaning of difficult words
