Slide 1 - Tekstslide

Today
  • What does the test look like?
  • How can you prepare yourself for the test?
  • What does a text consist of?
  • Further questions that you may have

Use a notebook to take notes. It will be very useful to use these notes when doing CITO exams.

Slide 2 - Tekstslide

I feel confident about my reading test for English.
Yes, definitely
I feel kind of confident
No, not really
No, not at all. Help me.PLEASE

Slide 3 - Poll

What does a text consist of?
To answer this question, it is equally important to look at the different questions you may get during an exam.
We see four different types of questions that are very frequently asked.
1. Introduction of the topic
2. Arguments in favor or against
3. Expert questions
4. Examples

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

1. Introduction of the topic
  • In a text, the topic is often introduced in the first paragraph
  •  CITO often asks questions about the topic
  • Look closely at the different questions that they ask, because they can be categorised in three ways

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Introduction of the topic
  • In an 'introduction of the topic' question, CITO does not give you a lot of information
  • Apparently, they believe you will figure out what the subject/main idea is yourself
  • So basically, this question does not give you any information
  • You have to figure out what the topic and main idea is by looking at the title, image, source and author.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

1. Introduction of the topic

Let's do another one of these

Take a close look at what is actually being said in the text

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

What's the correct answer?
A
B
C
D
E

Slide 10 - Poll

The correct answer is C
But why?

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

1. Introduction of the topic
Okay, now we've looked at the simple question 'wat is de kern van alinea 1'.
That is one of the three possible questions you get in the beginning of a text.
The other two options are:
- Wat wordt er gezegd over ....?
-Open vraag

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Slide 13 - Tekstslide

Let's look at an example

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

Let's look at an example
The correct answer is: C
A: there are no harmful side-effects to vegetarianism.
B: Not mentioned and not a conclusion.
D: It will not lead to more traffic. That is only mentioned to compare the emission.

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Open vragen
Of course, CITO also has open-ended questions.
It is very well possible, that the first question of the text is an open-ended question. In that case, CITO will, once more, provide a lot of interesting information.
Why do they have these open questions: because the title is difficult.
What do you use to find the answer: the title, picture and the information you get from the question.

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

Example

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Example
of
een besmettelijke ziekte

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Slide 19 - Tekstslide

What information does the question give you? Answer in Dutch or English. whatever you prefer.

Slide 20 - Open vraag

Another example
What is the correct answer?

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

What is the correct answer?
Transparancy
Reform
Recreation
Racism
Something else

Slide 22 - Poll

To summarize

  5. Gij zult leip gaan op signaalwoorden.
