WHAT IS SPEED?
Speed is a measure of how fast an object moves. In other words, how far of a distance an object moves in a certain amount of time.

Speed is measured in:
meters per second (m/s)
Kilometers per hour (km/h)

Average speed

As an object moves its speed is constantly changing, though this is very difficult to measure.  Therefore we calculate the average speed, which is the speed over a certain amount of time.
Here a car is constantly changing
its speed, but we only calculate the
average speed throughout the journey.

Calculating speed

To calculate speed 2 things are needed:
The distance in meters (or kilometers)
The time in seconds (or hours)

The formula for calculating speed is:

The unit for speed is m/s (or km/h)

• Ms de Vreede drives her car to school. It takes her 15 minutes and she lives 8 km away.
• Calculate her speed in m/s.
• Distance = 8 km = 8000 m
• Time = 15 min x 60 = 900 s
