Standard and Sub-standards

The ISTE Educator Standard 2.6, Facilitator, focuses on using technology to support student centered learning. As facilitators, educators design and guide meaningful learning experiences that empower students to take charge of their own education through digital tools and innovative practices.

The four sub-standards include:

Fostering student ownership of learning (2.6.a)

Managing technology-rich environments (2.6.b)

Encouraging problem solving through design and computational thinking (2.6.c)

Supporting creativity and expression with digital tools (2.6.d)

Why ISTE Stsndards Matter

In today's digital world, it's essential that students develope skills beyond memorization. They most be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and digital citizens. The ISTE Standards provide a roadmap for educators to integrate technology into instruction in a purposeful and engaging way. These standards ensure that all students have equitable access to future ready learning experiences.


When educators intentionally apply ISTE Standards, they create classrooms where students are active participants in their learning. These standards promote personalized learning, collaborative problem-solving, and meaningful use of technology, which are critical skills in both academic and real-world settings.

2.6.a- Ownership of Learning

This sub-standard encourages educators to support a learning culture where students take ownership of their learning goals and progress. It involves helping students set personal objectives, reflect on their growth, and develop self-direction—whether working alone or in groups. When students track their learning and reflect on their successes and challenges, they become more engaged and motivated.


Example: A teacher might have students use Google Sites or Seesaw to build a digital portfolio where they upload projects, track progress on goals, and reflect on their learning each week.

2.6.b- Managing Tech-Rich Learning Environments

This sub-standard focuses on helping educators effectively manage a variety of technology tools and environments—whether it's online platforms, virtual simulations, makerspaces, or real-world tech integration. The goal is to create safe, organized, and engaging spaces where students can explore and collaborate.


Example: In a middle school science class, students use a VR headset to take a virtual field trip inside the human body, while others collaborate in Google Classroom to document their observations and ask questions.

2.6.c- Design Thinking and Problem Solving

Here, educators are challenged to create opportunities for students to apply computational thinking and the design process to solve authentic problems. This sub-standard encourages students to think like engineers or developers, using creativity and logic to explore solutions through trial and error.


Example: An elementary teacher might ask students to use Scratch to code an interactive game that teaches others about recycling. Students brainstorm, prototype, test, and improve their games while learning key problem-solving skills.

2.6.d- Creativity and Expression

This sub-standard encourages teachers to support students in expressing themselves creatively through technology. Whether through digital art, podcasts, animations, or videos, students can use a wide range of tools to share their ideas, knowledge, and perspectives in engaging and original ways.


Example: A high school history class could create digital documentaries or podcasts about civil rights leaders, combining research, scriptwriting, and multimedia editing to tell powerful stories.
