How could nails differ in hairdressing and beauty therapy?

Professional image in hairdressing

In college we wear a tunic and trousers. However, within the hairdressing industry tunics are rarely worn.

Uniform policies will vary from salon to salon.

Most salons will also allow jewellery, varnish and nail extensions and any amount of make-up (as long as it is applied correctly!!)

Professional image in Beauty

Beauty salons have a very different image to hairdressers.

  • Tunics are nearly always worn

  • Hair is always up in a bun, plait or ponytail

  • Make-up is very minimal

  • Nails are short and natural (no extensions)

  • Very minimal jewellery (normally a wedding band, stud earrings and watch)

Personal Hygiene

In your groups what steps do you need to take to ensure good personal hygiene. Write them down ready to share with the rest of the class.

  • Pitch deck title

20

Does not meet the brief

  • Important areas from the brief are missing.

  • Hairdressing and beauty therapy are not both covered fully.

  • Only a few appearance requirements are included.

  • There is not enough information about clothing, footwear, hair, nails, jewellery, makeup and personal hygiene.

  • The photographs are included but are not properly explained.

  • Some statements are too vague to demonstrate understanding.

  • The finished work does not give a complete factual guide.

Pass

This example achieves a Pass because:

  • It answers all the required parts of the assignment brief.

  • Hairdressing and beauty therapy are shown separately.

  • It gives correct basic facts about clothing, footwear, hair, makeup, nails, jewellery and hygiene.

  • The tables make the information easy to locate.

  • Appropriate photographs support the information.

  • The wording explains what is allowed or required in each workplace.

It does not achieve a Merit because:

  • Most points are stated briefly.

  • There is limited explanation of why the requirements are important.

  • The photographs support the content but are not used in a particularly developed or original way.

Merit

This example achieves a Merit because:

  • All Pass requirements are covered accurately.

  • Hairdressing and beauty therapy each have a clearly presented section.

  • More photographs are used to demonstrate individual points.

  • Requirements are supported by relevant reasons.

  • It explains links to hygiene, safety, professionalism and client confidence.

  • The information has been organised and presented to a higher standard.

  • The learner has developed the basic fact-sheet idea into separate visual guides.

It does not achieve a Distinction because:

  • Some explanations could be developed further.

  • The presentation is strong, but it does not demonstrate the same level of detail and originality as the Distinction example.

  • Sources have not been included in a bibliography.

Distinction

  1. It fully meets the assignment brief.

  2. Hairdressing and beauty therapy are clearly separated and treated as different working environments.

  3. The information is accurate, selective and relevant rather than unnecessarily detailed.

  4. Several photographs are used purposefully to illustrate specific requirements.

  5. The assignment explains how appearance standards support hygiene, safety, professional image and client confidence.

  6. Differences between the two industries are explained clearly.

  7. Ideas have been developed into polished, role-specific visual guides.

  8. The work is consistently presented to a high standard.

  9. A bibliography acknowledges the textbook and image sources used.
