From Direct to Reported Speech

Direct: "She is lying." Reported: He said (that) she was lying.

When to Use Reported Speech

Use reported speech when recounting what someone else said, without quoting them exactly.

Transforming Tenses in Reported Speech

Present simple becomes past simple; present continuous becomes past continuous, etc. E.g. "I am reading" → She said she was reading.

Reporting Verbs

Common reporting verbs: say, tell, ask, claim, suggest, admit, deny. These help clarify the intention behind the reported speech.

Verb Patterns after Reporting Verbs

Some verbs are followed by 'that', ...

E.g., Think: "I think that it’s going to rain."
Say: "She said that they would be back by noon."

Believe: "They believe that the situation will improve."

Agree: "Everyone agrees that we have to act quickly."

Decide: "He decided that he didn't want to go.

... others by infinitives or gerunds.

"He ordered me to leave." "She denied taking the money."

Practice: Matching Patterns

Match the reporting verb with the correct continuation:

1. promise, 2. suggest, 3. advise.

CHOOSE FROM:

(to do, that, doing)

Verb Tenses and Reporting Verbs

Check for the reporting verb's tense to select the right verb tense in the reported speech. Present reporting verbs keep tenses closer to the original.

Exercise: Change to Reported Speech

Convert the direct speech:
"We aren't coming."

=> She said that ...

We aren't coming. => (Turn it into indirect speech)

Types of Speech: Statements, Commands, Questions

Reported speech differs for statements, negative statements, commands, and questions. Learn to spot and report these accurately.

Spot the Error

Identify the mistake in: "He said me that he will arrive late."
