Lesson Goal

At the end of this class you can:

- describe what scanning a text is

Studiewijzer

• Block 1 is on SOM
• Test on Alquin texts 1 to 4 keywords (EN-NE) in week 38

Reading a text

How you read the text will depend on whether you are reading it for the first, second or even third time. 

It also depends on the goal that you have for reading it. 

Skimming 

• You read a text quickly to get a general idea.
• Your eyes follow the text from start to finish.
• Skim the introduction to get an idea of what the text is about and the first and last lines of paragraphs.

Scanning

• You want to find specific information.
  
• Your eyes move quickly all over the text; from left to right, up or down.
  
• Scan to find names, places, numbers or dates.
  
• As you read the text, circle/underline or highlight the numbers, dates, names, etc.

Reading for specific information

• The second time you read the text you will be looking for detail and specific information.
• Read slowly and carefully.
• Read parts of the text again and again.

Alquin reading &  assignments

• Scanning exercise: look for specific information
• Vocab assignment: find synonyms, translate, matching ex.
• Multiple choice questions: do you understand the texts (you read for detail & specific information)

Black Story

Miles takes a step backwards and dies...

What has happened?

Miles is window-cleaning near the top of a high-rise building. Before finishing his work, he uses the mirror-like qualities of his freshly-cleaned window. He wants to look good because his new girl friend is waiting below. When Miles wants to check his appearance 'in full' he takes a step too far and falls to his death. 

Looking ahead

Friday 27/08: you can decide what you wish to work on. Either finish the assignments from Alquin, start reading a novel for your MO, or do examtext 1 (which you can find on Learnbeat).

Tuesday 31/08: Finish the assignments belonging to A Lifechanging Partnership. We will discuss them in class, so be prepared!
