Can betekent 'kunnen' of 'mogen'. Je gebruikt can en can't:

Om te zeggen dat iets (niet) mogelijk is:
I can see you. / I can't see anything.

Om te zeggen dat iets (niet) mag:
You can borrow my pen. / You can't park here.

Om te vragen of iets mogelijk is of mag:
Can you swim? / Can I have that?
Let op: je kunt can / can't alleen in de tegenwoordige tijd gebruiken.

Could betekent 'zou(den) kunnen' of 'zou(den) mogen'. Je gebruikt could en couldn't:



- Om te zeggen dat iets misschien mogelijk is:
    This could be a good thing.
- Om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden (niet) mogelijk was:
    Luckily, they could help me. / Unfortunately, they couldn't help me.
- Om te vragen of iets misschien mogelijk is:
    Coud that be a UFO?
- Om iets voor te stellen:
    We could go swimming tomorrow.
- Om een beleefde vraag te stellen:
    Could you open that window for me?

To be allowed to 

To be allowed to + hele werkwoord = mogen in de zin van 'toestemming krijgen (van iemand anders)'. 
In tegenstelling tot can en could kun je to be allowed to in alle tijden gebruiken.
Ik mocht weggaan: I was allowed to leave.
Hij zal niet mogen weggaan: He won't be allowed to leave.

To be able to 
To be able to + hele werkwoord = kunnen in de zin van 'in staat zijn'. 
In tegenstelling tot can en could kun je to be able to in alle tijden gebruiken.

Hij heeft de top kunnen bereiken: He has been able to reach the top.
We zullen niet kunnen blijven: We won't be able to stay.
