Art: Ways of Seeing & Expressing

What do you already know about how images and art communicate ideas?

Learning Objective

At the end of the lesson you will understand how art and images communicate meaning, how to observe and discuss artworks, and how to use your sketchbook for exploration.

What is Art About?

Art isn’t just about drawing “well”. It’s about looking carefully, sharing ideas, and noticing what makes each image special.

ACTIVITY 2 — Film Clip Analysis

Purpose of the activity

The purpose of this activity is to help students reflect on what learning art means and understand that an art class is a space for thinking, observing, and interpreting images, not only for giving correct answers.

Before Watching

  • What do you think an art class usually looks like?

  • What do students usually do in art class?

Do you think art has correct answers?

ACTIVITY 2 — Film Clip Analysis

Watch the scene carefully and think about how the students behave in the class.

ACTIVITY 2 — Film Clip Analysis

  1. What are the students doing in this class?

  2. Do they already know all the answers?

  3. What kind of class do you think this will be?

  4. Is this a traditional class? Why or why not?

  5. What does the teacher expect students to do?

  6. Do you think the teacher wants memorized answers or ideas and interpretations?

Activity 3 – Looking Beyond Beauty

Before Watching

Think for a moment:

When people say something is “good art”, what do they usually mean?

Activity 3 – Looking Beyond Beauty

Watch the Film Clip

Watch carefully.

Pay attention to:

  • the images the teacher shows

  • what she asks the students

  • how the students react

Activity 3 – Looking Beyond Beauty

Activity 3 – Looking Beyond Beauty

Think about this question while watching:

What is the teacher trying to show?

Activity 3 – Looking Beyond Beauty

Discuss with a partner:

  • What images does the teacher show?

  • Do the students expect those images?

  • How do the students react?

Activity 4: Visual Journal Entry Emotional Lines

Today you will create a small drawing in your sketchbook.

1️⃣ Think about the images we saw in the gallery walk and the film clips.
Choose one feeling or idea that stayed in your mind.

2️⃣ In your sketchbook create an abstract drawing using only lines.

3️⃣ Give your drawing a title.

4️⃣ Write one sentence:

My lines communicate ______ because ______.

✨ Your sketchbook is a place to experiment and explore ideas.
It does not need to be perfect.

Activity 5: Quote Reflection

Look at the quote: 'There are standards, techniques, composition, colour, even subject.' Are these rules or tools? Discuss: What might we learn this year?

Write down 3 things you learned in this lesson.

Write down 2 things you want to know more about.

Ask 1 question about something you haven't quite understood yet.
