Wat ga je kunnen?

Ik kan bij een Engelse examentekst de betekenis van een woord, uitdrukking of zin bepalen en een citeervraag beantwoorden.

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · WORDS IN CONTEXT

Zo pak je een examenvraag aan

  • 1. Lees de vraag: gaat het om één woord, een uitdrukking of een hele zin?

  • 2. Zoek de plek: lees de zin ervoor, de zin zelf en de zin erna

  • 3. Bedenk eerst zelf: wat betekent het hier, voordat je de opties leest

  • 4. Kies en controleer: vul je keuze in de zin in; past hij ook in de alinea?

  • 5. Twijfel? Zoek alleen dan het woord op en kies de betekenis die past

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · WORDS IN CONTEXT

Vraagtype 1: betekenis van een woord

  • Vraag: 'What is meant by ... (line / paragraph)?' bij een enkel woord

  • Zoek een uitleg, voorbeeld of tegenstelling in de buurt van het woord

  • Controleer of je keuze past bij de rest van de alinea

  • Het gaat om de betekenis in deze tekst, niet om de bekendste betekenis

Meerkeuze en open vragen over woordbetekenis. Woordenboek is toegestaan: gebruik het om je eigen idee te controleren.

Text 3: A library with a difference

(1) The old library on Mill Street had been derelict for years. Its windows were broken, its roof leaked, and nobody had set foot inside since the council shut it down. Most residents assumed it would simply be pulled down.

(2) Then a group of neighbours, led by a retired teacher called Mrs Okafor, had a different idea. Money was scarce, so they asked local builders to give a few hours each week, and shops donated paint and old furniture. Within a year the building looked almost new.

(3) Today the library is thriving. Children come after school to do their homework, and on Saturdays the café in the back room is so busy that people queue outside. 'We never expected such a response,' says Mrs Okafor. 'People simply wanted a place to meet.'

Eigen tekst voor Examenstof

Drie woorden met aanwijzingen in de context: derelict (broken windows, nobody inside), scarce (so they asked for gifts) en thriving (busy, people queue).

What is meant by 'derelict' (paragraph 1)?

A

Closed for a short time only

B

Protected from being pulled down

C

Left empty and in poor condition

D

Too small for the town

Goed: leeg en vervallen. Aanwijzingen: kapotte ramen, lekkend dak en niemand binnen. Verwachte fout: 'closed for a short time', omdat de gemeente het gebouw sloot.

What is meant by 'scarce' (paragraph 2)?

A

Hard to find enough of

B

Spent on the wrong things

C

Easy to raise from neighbours

D

Given freely by local shops

Goed: schaars. De volgende zin ('so they asked ...') is de gevolgtrekking: er was weinig geld, dus vroegen ze om gratis hulp. Verwachte fout: 'given freely by shops', omdat de winkels spullen schonken.

Wat betekent 'thriving' in alinea 3?

Goed: bloeiend, het gaat heel goed. Aanwijzingen: kinderen komen na school, het café is zo druk dat mensen buiten in de rij staan. Verwachte fout: 'rustig' of 'nieuw', omdat het gebouw gerenoveerd is.

EXAMENSTOF ENGLISH · READING · WORDS IN CONTEXT

Text 4: Out of the bag

(1) When the head of Grove Park School announced a new timetable, students were told to keep it under their hats until the official letter arrived. Within an hour, though, someone had spilled the beans online, and by lunchtime the whole town knew.

(2) The leak was a mixed blessing for the head, Mr Brandt. It saved him a lot of explaining, but he felt he had lost control. 'I'm not going to lose sleep over it,' he said, 'but next time I will choose my words more carefully.'

(3) Some parents were up in arms, saying that lessons would start too early. Others thought it was a storm in a teacup. The students themselves were over the moon, because the new timetable gave them a free afternoon every week.

Eigen tekst voor Examenstof

Idiomen in deze tekst: keep it under their hats, spill the beans, mixed blessing, lose sleep over, up in arms, a storm in a teacup, over the moon.

What is meant by 'spilled the beans' (paragraph 1)?

A

Made a mess of the plan

B

Taken a photo of the letter

C

Complained about the timetable

D

Revealed the secret

Goed: verklapt. Aanwijzing: eerst het verzoek om het geheim te houden, dan weet binnen een uur de hele stad het. Verwachte fout: 'made a mess', omdat de uitdrukking letterlijk om rommel gaat.

What is meant by 'a storm in a teacup'?

Some parents were up in arms. Others thought it was a storm in a teacup.

A

A sudden problem that got worse

B

A lot of fuss about something unimportant

C

A difficult decision for the school

D

An event that happened by accident

Goed: veel drukte om niks. Aanwijzing: de tegenstelling met de ouders die in opstand kwamen. Verwachte fout: 'a sudden problem that got worse', omdat 'storm' op een ramp lijkt te wijzen.

Wat betekent 'lose sleep over it'?

Goed: hij gaat er niet over piekeren of zich er zorgen over maken (hij ligt er niet wakker van). Let op de ontkenning 'I'm not going to'.

Text 5: Learning from series

(1) Ms Dalton, who teaches English at a secondary school in Utrecht, noticed that her best students shared a habit: they watched series in English. 'They don't study the words,' she says. 'They pick them up without noticing.'

(2) The trick, she explains, is to switch on English subtitles, not Dutch ones. Dutch subtitles do the thinking for you, whereas English ones make you work out how a word is spelled and used.

(3) A dictionary still has its place. 'Look up a word only when it keeps coming back or when the story makes no sense without it,' Ms Dalton advises. 'Otherwise you stop watching and start studying, and the fun is gone.'

Eigen tekst voor Examenstof

Fictieve docent. Drie vragen: parafrase, citeervraag en een figuurlijk gebruikte zin.

Which sentence expresses 'They pick them up without noticing'?

A

They learn words without trying to

B

They notice every new word they hear

C

They copy the words from a dictionary

D

They only remember words they study

Goed: leren zonder het te merken. Verwachte fout: 'they notice every new word', omdat 'pick up' en 'noticing' door elkaar lopen.

Citeer de zin over opzoeken, alinea 3.

Modelantwoord: Look up a word only when it keeps coming back or when the story makes no sense without it. Goed als de hele zin staat; fout als alleen een deel wordt geciteerd of als het Nederlands is.

What does Ms Dalton mean by 'start studying'?

Otherwise you stop watching and start studying, and the fun is gone.

A

You learn more words than before

B

You begin to enjoy the series more

C

Watching turns into hard work

D

You pay more attention to the story

Goed: kijken wordt werk. Aanwijzing: 'and the fun is gone'. Verwachte fout: 'you learn more words', omdat studeren op leren lijkt.

Welk vraagtype vind je het lastigst?

1

De betekenis van een woord afleiden

2

Een idioom of figuurlijk taalgebruik herkennen

3

Een parafrase herkennen

4
