Past simple: Last night I lost my keys, I had to call my flatmate to let me in.
Present perfect: I have lost my keys, can you help me look for them?


  • In the first sentence the speaker lost their key, but it has no effect on the present situation.
  • In the second sentence the speaker lost their key and needs help finding the key in the present situation, meaning right now.

What's the difference
Past simple: I knew Julie for ten years.

Present perfect: I have known Julie for ten years.
  • But the speaker lost contact


  • And the speaker still knows her

So what is it used for?
Present perfect:



Past simple:
  • An unfinished action that started in the past and continues to the present

  • He has been married for thirty-five years (and he's still married now)
  • John has never understood the present perfect (and still doesn't)

  • Finished actions

  • He was married for thirty-five years (but he divorced)
  • Yesterday I watched the press conference (and it's finished)
