Prepostions of time tell you when something is happening:

Use on for days and dates:

My birthday is on 8 October.
I'm having a party on Saturday.

Use in for months, years, seasons:

I usually go ice skating in winter.
Christmas is in December.
I was born in 1983.

in is also used before parts of the day:

School starts in the morning.
We go home in the afternoon.
My volleyball practice is in the evening.
Exception: I go to bed at night!!!
