How to form these tenses

How to form the present simple:
he/she/it: infinitive + -s
  • reads, calls, feels
all the other persons (I, you, we, they): just the infinitive
  • read, call, feel
BUT
  • cry - cries
  • wash - washes; kiss - kisses; watch - watches; fix - fixes

How to form the past simple:
Regular verbs: verb +  -(e)d
  • waited, liked, changed
Irregular verbs: verb form changes
  • go - went; think - thought; take - took

How to form the present continuous:
am/are/is + infinitive + ing
  • I am swimming
  • You are swimming
  • He/She/It is swimming
  • We are swimming
  • You are swimming
  • They are swimming

How to form the past continuous:
was/were + infinitive + ing
  • I was swimming
  • You were swimming
  • He/She/It was swimming
  • We were swimming

When to use these tenses

Slide 8 - Slide

Present simple
  • Used for habits, facts and opinions
  • Signal words: always, never, every ..., nowadays, seldom, sometimes, usually, regularly
Examples:
  • They go to France every year.
  • He is 22 years old.
  • Katy hates spiders. She always cries when she sees one.

Present continuous
  • Used when something is happening right now
  • Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, 'listen', 'look'
Examples:
  • I am listening to their new album right now.
  • Look! He is driving way too fast!

Past simple
  • Used when something happened (and finished) in the past
  • Signal words: last, ago, then, yesterday/this morning, dates in the past
Examples:
  • We slept at a farm last week.
  • He became a father in 2016.

Past continuous
  • Used when something happened in the past and lasted a longer period (usually combined with the past simple)
Example:
  • We were driving in our car when we saw a strange light.

  • I don't like spiders.
Past simple: did (not) + infinitive

  • She did not go to the gym this morning.
