How does it work?

Present Simple - I work hard every day.

Past Simple - I lost my keys yesterday.

Present Perfect - I have lost my keys.

Past Perfect - They had left before the show ended.

How does it work?

Past Perfect        -           had + past participle

something happened in the past before something else happened in the past.

 

When do you use Past Perfect?

- If you want to add information to a story / text.

- If you want to tell something that happened before something else happened in the past.

It is the past of the past.

I had always walked home until I bought my first car.

I had been stuck in the lift for hours when a fireman finally came and rescued me.

Let's tell a story...

Once upon a time there was an acrobat.

He had always been an acrobat for as long as he could remember. There was nothing else he liked to do more than swinging on the trapeze or jumping from great hights.

Past Perfect : something happened in the past BEFORE something else happened in the past.

had + past participle

Past Perfect Continuous : something happened in the past WHILE something else also happened in the past. 

was/were + verb + - ing

Examples:

Past Perfect : I had cleaned the house before my mother came home.

Past Perfect Continuous : I was cleaning the house when my mother came home.
